TFN legislature approves plan for 1,684 housing units

By Sandor Gyarmati

The Tsawwassen First Nation's legislature has approved a neighbourhood plan that will welcome about 4,000 more residents to TFN lands over the coming decade, said Chief Kim Baird.

"We are thrilled to confirm this plan and look forward to its positive impact on our community," Baird announced to band members following the March 15 vote.

"The Village centre, a local school, the Great Blue Heron Way and varied forms of housing will all be great additions to TFN," she said.

The new neighbourhood plan for land near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal was unveiled at a public open house at the TFN Recreation Centre earlier this month.

The land involved is about 110 hectares (270 acres) in an area designated by the TFN as enterprise and community within the band's overall land use plan.

According to the neighbourhood plan, 1,684 residential units would be built comprising single-detached (50%), townhouse (35%) and apartment (15%).

Richard Cook, a consultant and planner, who worked on the draft plan, told The Optimist at the open house the plan would also include pathways, some retail opportunities, an elementary school and other amenities in a village centre, including a gymnasium and arts centre.

Next steps will involve completion of necessary engineering, environmental and archaeological studies, as well as reviews and approvals of any development applications, Cook said following the vote.

Meanwhile, TFN Economic Development Corporation CEO Chris Hartman this week told the Optimist there could be an announcement about a development in the band's commercial zone in the next two to three weeks.
